James decides to turn the job down in favor of staying in Chicago and protecting his vulnerable family. 3- 39 The Family GunConcerned by increasing crime in the apartment building, James buys a cheap hand gun and brings it home. Florida is against it, but James insists. Then the gun turns up missing - the same day a young boy gets shot downstairs. 3- 40 Operation FloridaFlorida needs a gall bladder operation. She and James don't want to use the County hospital, so they check in to a private one. Now James is broke and has trouble paying the rent and other bills. 3- 41 Love in the GhettoThelma and her boyfriend, Larry, announce that they are to be engaged. Florida refuses to allow this because Thelma is only 17, and Larry's only job is pumping gas. J.J supports Thelma and Larry, but James says no to the idea. Then after Thelma gives up hope, her parents change their mind and the engagement takes place. 3- 42 Florida's Rich CousinFlorida's Cousin Edgar has a good job, but James does not like him. Florida wants to ask Edgar for financial help, and James is against it. Edgar visits for dinner and Florida asks for the help, but she finds out Edgar has lost his high paying job and has money troubles of his own. 3- 43 The WeekendIt is James and Florida's 20th Anniversary. Willona gives them matching Chinese bath robes. Then James' boss, Charlie, gives them his mountain cabin for the weekend. Florida is hesitant to leave the kids alone for two days. Later at the cabin, Charlie's girlfriend shows up by accident, and stirs things up for James - and Florida. 3- 44 The BabyLorreta, a neighbor, is having a baby soon. But she's putting it up for adoption because she feels she doesn't have the money to raise the child properly. The Evan's host Lorreta's baby shower, and she suddenly goes into labor! J.J. must deliver a baby right in the apartment. Then Thelma convinces Lorreta to keep her baby. 3- 45 Michael's Big FallMichael is attending a special school for gifted students. But now he is afraid to bring home his report card, because he didn't get all straight A's. What's more, a fat loud-mouth straight-A smart-boy has called Michael "dumb," and Michael has hit the boy. Now the parents are at the Evans' door to complain. James is not in this episode. Instead, Florida's brother is visiting, and he seems to be blowing his top and making matters worse. 3- 46 The PoliticiansAlderman Davis is up for election. James and J.J back him with pride. But Florida, Michael, Thelma, and Willona are against him, choosing to support a younger, more honest candidate. Davis ends up winning the election because all the Black community forgot to vote. 3- 47 Willona's DilemmaWillona spots an attractive man and asks him out on a date. Then she decides to break up with him. But then she discovers that he is deaf - and has been reading lips the whole time! Now she can't break up, or it would seem like his handicap is the reason. So she dates him for a couple weeks just to be nice. Then she decides it's time to break up - but he breaks up with her first. 3- 48 Florida's ProtestFlorida has extra money, so she spends $12 on a nice beef roast. The whole family gets sick from bad meat. Florida and James go to the market and James shouts at the manager, but he assures them it was an accident. As they are leaving the office Florida overhears the manager talking on the phone. It turns out he knew the meat was bad, but decided to sell it anyway just to make more money. James returns and blackmails the manager into eating a plate of the tainted beef. 3- 49 The MuralOnce again, Thelma has been granted an opportunity to attend a University. But she needs $200 to make ends meet. James is sorry to admit that he's spent all his savings on Florida's operation and J.J's teeth. But then a local bank hires J.J to paint a mural on their wall. J.J will earn $250! But will the Bank Manager be satisfied with J.J's work? 3- 50 A Loss of ConfidenceConvinced that he's "dy-no-mite" with the ladies, J.J. asks his sister Thelma's girl friend JoAnn out on a date. But J.J.'s charm fails to win JoAnn's affections. Turned down for a date, J.J.'s ego goes into a tailspin, leading to a state of gloom and sulking. Will his ego ever recover? 3- 51 CleatusThe F.B.I. knocks at the Evans' door looking for Florida's cousin Cleatus. But Florida has not seen him for years - besides, he would never rob a bank. After the agents leave, Cleatus shows up with a suitcase full of cash. James is forced to throw him out of the house. 3- 52 The Family TreeJames biological father pays a visit to the family. But James refuses to talk to him - because he left James and his mother many years before. 3- 53 A Place to DieAn 80 year old man follows Michael home and insists on spending New Years Eve with the Evans family. Michael claims the man is a friend he's known for years in the neighborhood. The man claims he will leave at midnight - if he is still alive. The party that night is a lot of fun, with singing and dancing. Then the old visitor quietly passes away. 3- 54 J.J's Fiancee (Part 1)J.J and his girlfriend are in love, and have decide to get married. The parents of both families are strongly against it. So J.J and his fiancee pretend to forget the idea and just go to the high school senior prom - but they really elope to get married. 3- 55 J.J's Fiancee (Part 2)J.J and his fiancee have managed to sneak off to a hotel and find a minister, but the girl has lost her drugs, and begins to get sick. J.J discovers that she is a herion addict. She runs away to look for more drugs. 3- 56 Sweet Daddy WilliamsJ.J. is happy when he is hired to paint a portrait of Sweet Daddy's girlfriend, especially since he has been promised his own public art display in return. But James and Florida are not happy with Sweet Daddy. And it turns they have a good reason to dislike him. 3- 57 The InvestigationMichael is writing a term paper for school. He sends a letter to a Communist country to get some answers. This causes him to be investigated by the F.B.I. 3- 58 J.J in TroubleJ.J thinks he has contracted a venereal disease. He may have spread it to his girlfriend too. He scrambles to get himself cured before his parents have to find out about it. 3- 59 Florida the WomanFlorida is unhappy because she feels that her family is taking her for granted. So she accepts a lunch date with her male boss, a single man. This causes James to become angry and jealous. 3- 60 The BreakupThelma and her boyfriend, Larry, are engaged, and considering getting married. But then Larry gets a job offer in California. Thelma is asked to move there with him, but she must refuse because she doesn't want to leave Chicago and her family. 3- 61 The Rent PartyThe Evans neighbor, Wanda, is in danger of being evicted for failure to pay back-rent. The Evans family throw a party and variety show for which they charge admission. Michael sings a song entitled When You're Young And In Love.
