The Evans family holds a going away party at the apartment. But the phone rings. Bad news, James has been killed in an auto accident down south. Everybody is in shock. 4- 63 The Big Move (Part 2)After James funeral, a wake is held at the apartment. Michael and Thelma are disturbed at the fact that Florida has not cried, but remained in good spirits all day. Finally after everybody leaves, she breaks down and sobs in front of her children. 4- 64 J.J and the Older WomanJ.J has a new girlfriend, but Florida is not happy, because she is 45 years old. J.J begins spending romantic evenings with the woman at her apartment. But he breaks up with her after learning that she is only interested in a quick fling. 4- 65 Michael, The WarlordMichael is bullied by his peers into joining a local gang called The Junior Warlords. He comes home with the gang jacket that he must now always wear. After getting cornered in the kitchen - he hastily hides the jacket in the oven. Florida finds out about the whole affair and follows Michael to his gang's hide out. A fight ensues, and Florida must fight the gang off with a baseball bat. 4- 66 Michael's Great RomanceMichael dates an attractive new girl. She visits the apartment, but falls for J.J. instead. That night in bed, in a fit of anger, Michael hits J.J. but J.J insists that it wasn't his fault that he is so charming. Then Michael comes up with a plan. He will act more like J.J next time he sees the girl. She is not impressed, and tells Michael to be himself. 4- 67 Evans Versus DavisAlderman Davis, a city politician, is attending a city meeting, but he needs a speaker from the working class projects. J.J and the Evans family feel that Davis is a corrupt and dishonest man. But Davis forces J.J to give a "Pro Davis" speech at a city council meeting, or face eviction of his family. J.J. takes the stand to speak, then proceeds to mock and insult Davis in every way he can think of. The crowd thinks it is a comic bit and is pleased by it. Davis is happy, he has fooled the people again. 4- 68 J.J's New Career (Part 1)The rent is due, Florida is broke, and .J.J has lost his job. They are facing eviction. So J.J gets a job as a numbers runner. But he tells Florida that it's a legitimate sales job. J.J begins to wear expensive suits. 4- 69 J.J's New Career (Part 2)J.J starts to bring home expensive gifts for everybody, including a big brand new color tv. Florida finds out that J.J is running numbers, and she demands that he quit, but J.J refuses. Florida throws him out of the house. J.J goes to live with the hustlers, but he finds out that they also pimp hookers, and deal drugs. That night the police raid the place, and J.J narrowly escapes being arrested by hiding in a tall skinny broom closet. He calls Florida and asks to come back home. 4- 70 Grandpa's VisitJames' father, Grandpa Evans, has recently lost his wife. He is invited to Thanksgiving dinner. But he shows up with a new woman and wants to sleep with her, even though they aren't married. Florida objects, there is an argument, and Grandpa decides to leave. Then the kids change Florida's mind and rush to the bus station just in time to catch Grandpa. 4- 71 Rich Is Better Than Poor... MaybeThelma is tutoring a student. While at the apartment the student notices that J.J. has won a $2500 lottery prize. Later, she returns with an accomplice, played by What's Happening's Shirley Hemphill, in an attempt to rob the Evans' of their prize. One girl holds the family hostage at gunpoint, while the other forces Florida to go to the bank with her to cash the check. But the plan backfires. 4- 72 Florida's Night OutFlorida has been lonely. So the kids convince her to go out dancing with Willona. Florida meets a charming gentleman, dances, and has a good time. But then she recognizes a voice from across the room. It's Bookman! And he's romancing some young lady - but Bookman is already married! Florida confronts Bookman and thoroughly embarrasses him. Then Bookman promises to provide better maintenance service, in exchange for Florida's silence. 4- 73 The Judy Cohen StoryJ.J. meets an over weight female singer that lacks self confidence. He decides to become her manager and encourages her to perform. She sings Send in the Clowns and the crowd loves her. But then another agent steals J.J's new client from him. 4- 74 The Comedian and the Loan SharksJ.J has discovered an exceptionally talented stand up comedian. Except for the fact that he has stage fright and gets sick in front of large audiences. That doesn't stop J.J. He borrows $250 from a loan shark and rents a spot at a night club for his comic to perform. But the comic gets sick and fails to put on his act. Now the loan shark's thugs are there, ready to break J.J in half. The club proprietor pays the loan shark, and J.J. must mop floors for the next month. 4- 75 The HustleFlorida is in desperate need of a vacation. But the family is broke. J.J buys a big box of underwear from a bankrupt company and tries to sell it to raise the money to send Florida on a holiday. 4- 76 Thelma's African Romance (Part 1)Thelma is falling in love with an African exchange student. 4- 77 Thelma's African Romance (Part 2)The African exchange student asks Thelma to marry him. But Thelma would have to move to West Africa. Thelma is almost ready to say yes when Michael and J.J discover that polygamous marriages are accepted in this African country. The exchange student admits there would be other wives, and Thelma decides to call it off. 4- 78 Willona's SurpriseWillona is surprised when her ex-husband shows up and wants to get back together. He claims he has changed, and is a better person now. Willona begins to get serious with him. But he makes a pass at Thelma, who must physically fight the man off. Thelma is forced to tell Willona, but the man calls Thelma a liar. Willona dumps him on the spot, after slapping him across the face. 4- 79 A Friend in NeedA friend of J.J's has lost his shot at becoming a sports star and is depressed. He shows up at the Evans' apartment for a party. Then locks himself in the bathroom and overdoses on pills, in an attempt to kill himself. J.J must save the mans life. 4- 80 A Stormy RelationshipMichael is working part time at a local repair shop. Florida becomes upset and demands that Carl, the shopkeeper, fire Michael - after she learns Carl is converting Michael into an atheist. 4- 81 Florida and CarlCarl is becoming interested in dating Florida. But she is reluctant. 4- 82 My Son, The FatherJ.J is becoming conceited about being the head of the Evans household. So Michael and Carl attempt to set him straight. 4- 83 J.J. in BusinessJ.J goes into business with two of his friends. They manufacture and sell greeting cards. But they are forced to go out of business after failing to come up with the money to fill a large order. 4- 84 Love Has a Spot on His Lung (Part 1)Carl and Florida are real happy together. Carl tells Michael, J.J, and Thelma that he wants to marry Florida. 4- 85 Love Has a Spot on His Lung (Part 2)After agreeing to marry Florida, Carl changes his mind. Florida is hurt and angered, demanding an explanation. Carl explains that he's been to the Doctor's this morning.
